Means to an end
On July 13, 1906 Captain Alfred Dreyfus rejoined the French army after being exonerated of all charges. (He was freed from Devil's Island in 1899.) I wondered what was happening on the day this postcard was mailed.

I bet it looked big to any farm boy who saw it when it was new. Come to think of it, I bet it would look big to me now.
Chuck, it's always a trick to try and put yourself at specific moment in time. I like reading historic newspapers for that very reason. Some of the things that appear that people were most worked up about are not even remembered today.
ReplyDeleteVirgil, it's funny to see the building without all the other tall ones around. It barely stands out at all in Chicago today, but back in the day it must have seemed pretty grand. I was unaware until I clicked on your Wikipedia link that this was the building where Burnham made his Plan of Chicago.
