Person-of-Mystery

Welcome to Cipher Saturday!  You've found the home of everyone's favorite weekend pastime, where a stylized photo of a somewhat famous person from history is provided for you to identify.

Additional clues may be found in the cipher below:

HCOETR OYLN LISKE LELNYO YLLODEEW WMRSO ON ODL DDOORTIF

So, who could I be?  That's the mystery!  Go ahead and take a guess and then go enjoy your day.  Check back tomorrow and I'll reveal the answer.  The first correct post will be declared the winner.

If you'd like to make sure that your guess is correct, enter his name into Google Images and the this photo will be found on the first page of image results.

Your ciphers got too hard for me. I'll guess Ernest Shackleton because you've been talking about snow.

Judi, thanks for the guess, but it's not Shackleton.

Finally Nate one I can recognize.

D.W. Griffth

Congratulations, DAG. It is D.W. Griffith. If you noticed, the first letter of each word in the cipher spells "Hollywood."

Thanks Nate,

To be honest I just happened to have recognized the photo.

Good eye, DAG! Film has been on my mind as this term I started teaching a new class - History Through Film.

Sounds like a great course. I once had an entire semester on silent films. And most of that was D.W.Griffth films. Unfortunately most historical films are not so accurate with perhaps "The Longest Day" and Tora,Tora Tora" being the exceptions

DAG, my students learn about historical events/time periods and then we watch a film centered around that time. I'm moving chronologically through US history, so we started with 1776 (the musical). After studying about the early United States, I got a big kick on the students' faces when John Adams suddenly broke into song for the first time. I didn't tell them it was a musical beforehand.
