Congratulations to Unknown (aka Robert)! Was the seated pose the giveaway or did you recognize him?
It was serendipity. I thought he was Gutzon Borglum. Research proved otherwise, however, my detour into American sculpture revealed the identity of the mystery man.
Out of curiosity, where are these historic photos from? It would be great if you could post the image sources – I’d love to see more! Thanks.
Anon, many of the photos come from the Library of Congress collection. See loc.gov for lots of good public images. Although Douglas Yeo's website, http://www.yeodoug.com/resources/dc_french/daniel_chester_french.html provides images of many of French's best loved sculptures.
