Person-of-Mystery

Welcome to Cipher Saturday!  You've found the home of everyone's favorite weekend pastime, where a stylized photo of a somewhat famous person from history is provided here for you to identify.

Additional clues may be found in the cipher below:

ERMTG-VG-FM

So, who could I be?  That's the mystery!  Go ahead and take a guess and then go enjoy your day.  Check back tomorrow and I'll reveal the answer.  The first correct post will be declared the winner.

If you'd like to make sure that your guess is correct, enter the right name into Google Images and the this photo will be found on the first page of image results.

Hi Nate,

My probably wrong guess is Sarah Bernhardt.

You are correct in your hunch that it is probably a wrong guess. It is not Sarah Bernhardt, but thanks for trying DAG, I know it's a little more difficult with the stylized photo.

The contest continues!

I happen to know this is Elizabeth Antigone Schnarbart, inspiration for Burma Shave's legendary roadside advertising campaign. (Note the 3:00 pm shadow on her upper lip.) Here's the original ditty she inspired:

Lizzie's lip was awful hairy,
Some thought her name was relly Larry,
Then she got a great brain wave,
And started using Burma Shave.

Of course, Burma Shave's crack ad team didn't misspell 'really.'

Chuck, you should have been an ad man!

I believe the cipher is "vingt-et-un", a reference to the precursor to BlackJack. I thought what looked like a moustache was actually an artifact of Nate's stylization process, but apparently not. Hope this helps someone...

Congratulations Brian, you solved the cipher. The identity of the Person-of-Mystery is still to be had.

Wold that make it General John J. ("Black Jack") Pershing as a cross-dresser, then?

I'm impressed Brian solved that cipher. First I thought it was Marie-Antoinette on a bad hair day, but now I think it is Eleanor Dumont AKA Madame Moustache,
the first blackjack pro.

Congratulations Rob, it is Madame Dumont! Well done.
