The most beautiful place I ever saw in my life is the palace and garden of Versailles.  S.A.C.

Looks like you're feeling a little better, at least (compared to this past weekend). Try not to push it...get more sleep and maybe some chicken soup, and get well soon.
I saw the Versailles palace once, and can think of (to me) prettier sights with no strain: rainbows, bucolic landscapes, ships under full sail and pregnant women (last two borrowed from B. Franklin, but I agree with both.)

S.A.C.'s trip must have been fascinating. Although he/she couldn't have known it, la belle epoque was about to disappear just a few years later.

Chuck, I often tell my students one of the biggest problems with studying history is we know how it progresses. We think we know when people are making good or bad choices. That's not the case with people living in those times. They have to live without knowledge of future events. It's difficult to try and get a present perspective when thinking about history.

Exactly right. Knowing how things turn out changes everything - I mean it fundamentally changes our perspective on the past. We can barely imagine what it must have been like facing an uncertain future during the Depression, for example.
